Challenges That Can Arise in Project Management

Today, we’ll be explaining some of the common challenges of project management, and discuss how to work through them.

Managing a project takes a great deal of planning, juggling many tasks in the air at once. Given the complications of project management, it’s easy for people to run into roadblocks while projects are being completed. Today, we’ll be explaining some of the common challenges of project management, and discuss how to work through them.

Scope Creep

Scope creep is a common challenge to face in project management, and it refers to what happens whenever project requirements change in the middle of the project’s completion. Some project adjustments can affect its timeline, while others can affect the overall cost.

To overcome this challenge, project progress must be monitored closely to ensure that everything is currently going as planned. You also must maintain effective communication with all stakeholders so they can let you know about any potential road bumps a project is encountering. There also must be a formal process that’s used for requesting, reviewing, and getting approval for any changes in a project.

Budget Changes

This goes hand-in-hand with changes to the scope of a project. When plans change, the budget will likely also change. Maybe a project is taking longer than expected to finish, and the employees working on the project need to be paid for the extra time, as an example.

To keep the budget in check, the budget needs to be regularly monitored and updated. This helps you identify potential overruns so that you can take the right steps to correct the problem early on. You should also put aside some contingency funds at the beginning of your project. That way, if setbacks arise, you already have money put aside to account for those setbacks.

Ineffective Communication

Communication is at the heart of any project, and no project succeeds without it. If people don’t stay in constant communication with each other, there will reach a point at which people aren’t sure of how a project is progressing. If you can’t be sure how a project is progressing, you can’t be sure that you’re on the path to get the desired result in the end.

That’s why you want to have an effective communication plan in place, which includes regular check-ins at predictable and coordinated times. When you do speak with stakeholders in a project, make sure to ask about the progress that’s been made, and establish what needs to be done next. You also want to make it clear who the right points of contact are in a project.
