How to Stop Carpet Wicking From Happening

How to Stop Carpet Wicking From Happening

To prevent carpet wicking from happening, here are steps that you can take.

Carpets are great for adding a touch of comfort and sophistication into any room that has them. One problem they can encounter, however, is staining. This is especially true when stains keep coming back again and again. Recurring stains are often a result of something called carpet wicking. To prevent carpet wicking from happening, here are steps that you can take.

Get Messes Spot Cleaned Immediately

While we try our best to avoid spills, there’s always a chance that one could still pop up. If a spill does take place, you want to clean it up as quickly as possible. The sooner you can get a spill cleaned up, the less time that spill has to sink more deeply into your carpet’s fibers. Once spills reach into the deep parts of your carpet, it’s more likely for carpet wicking to occur.

While you’re cleaning a spill, make sure you’re blotting the area instead of scrubbing it. If you try to scrub a stain, you can spread it to other parts of your carpet, or even push a stain more deeply into your carpet fibers.

Use Less Water During Cleaning

While water is helpful while cleaning a spill, there is such a thing as too much. Overwetting is another common reason for carpet wicking to happen. That’s why you should use as little water as needed when cleaning up a spill on your carpet. If you’re using a carpet cleaner, you should follow the instructions that the manufacturer has provided in order to ensure the cleaner is properly used.

Dry Up the Area Quickly

Once you’ve cleaned up the spill, you should get the area dried as quickly as you can. Heaters, fans, and dehumidifiers are all helpful in this regard. You could even request professional carpet cleaning services to make use of their own professional-grade equipment to assist with the cleaning and drying processes.
